Heat Loss Survey & Property Assessment

A full BS EN 12831 heat loss calculation for your specific house, walls, floors, windows, roof, before any system is specified. This is the step that decides whether your heat pump saves you money or costs you more than the boiler it replaced.

Why A Heat Loss Survey Matters Before Installation

Most quotes in this market are based on a rule-of-thumb calculation, not a proper heat loss survey. That is why the numbers vary so wildly. A correctly sized heat pump for your house might be 8kW. An installer cutting corners quotes you 12kW. Another says 14kW. None of them can show their working.

Oversizing and undersizing are responsible for the majority of bad UK heat pump installations, systems that short-cycle, run inefficiently, and cost more per month than gas. The heat loss survey is the only mechanism that prevents it.

If an installer will not carry out a full room-by-room heat loss calculation before sizing your system, that tells you what you need to know.

Every installer gives me a completely different answer and I don't know who to trust.

What Our Survey Process Includes

  • Room-by-room heat loss calculation to BS EN 12831: the standard Heat Geek engineers are assessed against, not a 20-minute site visit and a stock answer.
  • Radiator and emitter assessment: whether your existing radiators can run efficiently at heat pump flow temperatures, and exactly which rooms need upgrades.
  • Pipework and hydronic review: flow rates, pipe sizing and system design, the details that determine real-world COP.
  • A written report you keep: recommended system size, projected running costs, and any insulation work that should come first. Yours whether or not you proceed with us.

Walls, Floors, Windows & Roof Analysis

We measure and calculate the heat loss of every element of your building fabric, wall construction and insulation, floor type, glazing performance, roof and loft insulation. The output is a number in watts for every room in the house at design outdoor temperature. That number is what the system is sized against. Not an average. Not a guess.

When Insulation Improvements Are Needed First

Some houses are not ready for a heat pump yet, and a failed installation serves nobody. If your survey shows that loft insulation, cavity fill or draught-proofing would materially change the system size or running costs, we tell you before you commit, not after. In some cases the right advice is to do that work first and install the heat pump next season. We will give you that advice even though it delays our own job.
